Induction Day for Potential Course Leaders

Saturday 9 October 2010, 10 am – 5 pm at Paul’s Cancer Support Centre, Clapham Junction, London SW11

The Healing Journey Programme is a 5 level developmental course teaching self care skills to people affected by cancer (see www.healingjourney.org.uk or the introductory leaflet for more information).

The day is for people who are considering becoming a leader of the programme. The aims of the induction day are to show in detail how Levels 1 and 2 of the programme work in practice and to introduce the workings of Levels 3-5 in less detail. (As a first step, leaders may want to consider initially offering Levels 1 and 2 of the programme in order to test out the response. Levels 1 and 2 form a unit which prepares participants for the more in-depth psychological and spiritual work that takes place on Levels 3-5.)

Two pilots of the full Healing Journey Programme have been run at Paul’s Cancer Support Centre, with a third pilot course in progress. Patrick, Pauline and Petra have co-led these courses.

The day will provide a brief overview of the whole Healing Journey Programme, followed by discussion of the aims and methods employed on each of the five levels, and some experiential exercises from the programme. Levels 1-4 follow the Canadian programme structure closely. Level 5 has been redesigned using approaches from transpersonal psychology, and following insights from the inter-spirituality movement of long term Buddhist and Christian meditators.

We will discuss the methods that are in use to motivate change, and will have a brief experience of constellation work, which is used on Levels 3, 4 and 5 at our London courses. We will also look at the adaptations made to the programme in order to offer the courses to a diverse population in a UK context. There will be an opportunity to discuss the way you see the programme working in your setting.

The course fee includes the Levels 1 and 2 participant manuals and leaders’ manuals for Levels 1 and 2. We will need everyone attending the induction day to have read the workbooks and manuals in advance.

We are working on producing adapted materials for Levels 3-5 of the programme, and will send attendees some further materials about these levels in September. The UK version of the course is still a work in progress and we will welcome feedback from potential leaders as to the approaches taken.

Joining Healing Journey UK - there is an application process in order to be part of the Healing Journey UK Network and to have courses listed on the HJUK website. This will include sending in evidence of training completed, membership of professional bodies, and CRB checks. It may include an interview.
